"Call of Juarez: The Cartel" was announced a couple weeks ago, a follow-up to Techland's 2009 Wild West-set first-person shooter "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood." We already know that "The Cartel" jumps forward in time to present-day Los Angeles, but little more than that was revealed in the initial announcement. More details came today via the game's publisher, Ubisoft.

The game will open with the bombing of a United States law enforcement agency, a surprise attack by a fictional drug cartel. Suspicions are soon raised that the incident occurred in part because federal agencies have been infiltrated by cartel members. The response is to establish a task force made up of three uniquely talented individuals who are under orders to bring down the cartel.

Ubi's description of the three agents, who are also the game's playable characters: "The task force consists of Kim Evans, a gang-affiliated street kid-turned-FBI agent, Eddie Guerra, a DEA agent with a chronic gambling habit and brutal LAPD detective and descendant of Ray McCall from the original 'Call of Juarez,' Ben McCall."

The adventure that unfolds takes the trio through a variety of locations, including Los Angeles, Cali, the state of Arizona and Juarez, Mexico. As you might have gathered from the character descriptions, each member of the team also has some signature character flaw, resulting on the gameplay front in "personal challenges and demons to face."

The game's features include three player online co-op -- with an as-yet-unannounced "twist" -- a unique story and ending for each of the three characters, 15 missions/maps, more than 30 weapons and a "wide variety of gameplay including punitive raids, witness protection, tough interrogations, undercover missions, car chases and more."

"Call of Juarez: The Cartel" is coming to "next-gen consoles" and Windows PCs sometime this summer.
